The UK’s National Energy System Operator (NESO) manages the UK’s electricity grid, balancing tens of gigawatts of electricity supply and demand.
Solar generation has been growing rapidly and NESO identified it as one of their key sources of uncertainty.
Open Climate Fix worked closely with NESO to integrate our cutting edge weather and renewable forecast AI models into their process.
Open Climate Fix’s forecast service, Quartz Solar, has halved their solar forecast errors and is used by:
- Control room engineers for real-time balancing
- Dynamic Reserve Setting model to determine how much backup or “reserve” the grid needs - resulting in savings of over £30 Million and 300,000 Tonnes of CO2 per year.
- NESO’s forecast of total system demand - which reducing their forecast error by a massive 8% - resulting in further cost and carbon savings.
